Salv. And I’ll say then, that the ball within the concave didn’t transfer, and so he shall not be certain to shew how that in descending it continueth all the best way vertically over one level, for that it won’t do any such thing. Salv.I did not say, that the Earth had no precept, either interne, or externe to the motion of gyration, but I say, that I do not know which of the 2 it hath; and yet my not understanding it hath not a energy to deprive it of the same; but when this Author can inform by what principle different mundane bodies are moved round, of whose motion there may be little doubt; I say, that that which maketh the Earth to move, is a vertue, wish to that, by which Mars and Jupiter are moved, and wherewith he believes that the starry Sphere it self additionally doth transfer; and if he will but guarantee me, who’s the mover of 1 of these moveables, I will undertake to be able to inform him who maketh the Earth to maneuver. Simpl. The Author will reply, that if Copernicus maketh only the inferiour part of the Air to maneuver, and supposeth the upper half thereof to need the said movement, he can not give a reason, how that quiet air might be in a position to hold these grave bodies together with it, and make them keep pace with the motion of the Earth.
He regretted it, however needed to confess that the impulse was stronger than his will. It’s true, he saith, and for my part I believe he saith well, that the part of the air neer to the Earth, being somewhat a terrestrial evaporation, could have the same nature, and naturally observe its motion; or, as being contiguous to it, may comply with it in the same manner, because the Peripateticks say, that the superiour part of it, and the Element of fireplace, observe the movement of the Lunar Concave, in order that it lyeth upon them to declare, whether that movement be pure, or violent. And proveth, that it cannot be Nature, alledging that that’s opposite to truth, expertise, and to Copernicus himself. Simpl. The Author proveth, that it could actually neither be inward nor outward. Most of us can sense that something is off when we expertise contact that is extra sexual than therapeutic, even if we can’t pinpoint exactly what’s occurring. Simpl. The substractions are for my part insufficient to salve this difference, which is so extreamly too great to be reconciled: and in this case I have no more to say however that, Quandoque bonus dormitet Homerus. Earth, hath a restricted Sphere, out of which such a pure inclination would stop; moreover that, as I’ve said, the Air shouldn’t be that which carrieth the moveables together with it; which being separated from the Earth, do observe its motion; so that all of the objections come to nothing, which this Author produceth to show, that the Air can not cause such results.
And to prove that, it sufficeth (nor is more required) that it moveth with the identical movement, and finisheth its circulations with the same velocity, that the Terrestrial Globe doth. Moon round, besides (as I’ve mentioned) onely the name, which more notably and properly now we have assigned to the motion of descent, specifically, Gravity; whereas for the reason for circular movement, in additional general termes, we assign the Vertue impressed, and name the identical an Intelligence, either helping, or informing; and to infinite different motions we ascribe Nature for their trigger. In order that if we suppose these balls to be equal in magnitude and gravity, and being placed within the concave of the Lunar Sphere, we permit them a free descent, and if we make the motion downwards equal in velocity to the motion about, (which however is otherwise, if the ball A, &c.) they shall be falling at the very least (that we could grant much to our adversaries) six dayes; in which time they shall be turned six times about the Earth, &c.
I do know that you is not going to deny, however that the principle of grave bodies that moveth them downwards, isn’t any less natural, and intrinsecal, than that principle of light bodies, which moveth them upwards: so that I propose to your consideration a ball of lead, which descending via the Air from a fantastic altitude, and so transferring by an intern precept, and comming to a depth of water, continueth its descent, and without some other externe mover, submergeth a great way; and but the motion of descent within the water is preternatural unto it; however but nonetheless dependeth on a precept that’s inner, and never exterior to the ball. I have no idea, what sort of thing that gravity is, by which the Earth descendeth; but I know that it’s an intern precept, seeing that if or not it’s not hindered, it moveth spontaneously: and quite the opposite, I know that the principle which moveth it upwards, is external; although that I do not know, what thing that vertue is, impressed on it by the projicient. Simpl.Very nicely; But when grave bodies, and mild can have no principle, either inner or external of shifting circularly, than neither can the terrestrial Globe transfer with a circular motion: and thus you may have the intent of the Author.
